Nigerian monarch dies in US

The ancient kingdom of Ipokia in Ogun State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its traditional ruler, the Onipokia of Ipokia, Oba Yisa Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan (Orijajoogun I), who passed away in the United States after a brief illness.

The first-class monarch reportedly died on Saturday, June 27, at the age of 53.

Oba Olaniyan ascended the throne as the 46th Onipokia of the historic Ipokia Kingdom in August 2020, ushering in a reign marked by a strong focus on education, youth development and economic growth.

Before becoming king, he built a successful professional career in the United States. He studied Criminal Justice at the University of Houston-Downtown and worked across the aviation, oil and gas, and renewable energy industries.

During his reign, the monarch championed initiatives aimed at improving educational opportunities, empowering young people, attracting investment to Ipokia and strengthening ties between the kingdom and Nigerians living in the diaspora. He was also widely acknowledged for promoting peace, unity and sustainable development across Yewaland.

Beyond his traditional responsibilities, Oba Olaniyan founded the Afro-Heritage Broadcasting and Entertainment Awards, an initiative dedicated to celebrating African entertainment personalities and promoting the continent’s rich cultural heritage.

His contributions to community development and cultural preservation earned national recognition in 2025 when he was inducted into the Nigerian Books of Record Hall of Fame.

Since news of his passing emerged, tributes have continued to pour in from fellow traditional rulers, political leaders, community organisations and indigenes of Ipokia both within Nigeria and abroad, with many describing him as a visionary monarch whose impact extended far beyond the palace.

The palace is expected to announce details of his burial and the traditional rites that will accompany his final passage in accordance with the customs of the ancient Ipokia Kingdom.
