FG secures release of six Nigerians detained in Côte d’Ivoire

The Federal Government has secured the freedom of six Nigerians who were detained in Côte d’Ivoire over alleged economic crime-related offences following months of diplomatic engagement between both countries.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

According to the ministry, four of the detained Nigerians regained their freedom on June 22, while the remaining two were released a day later, on June 23.

It attributed the successful outcome to sustained diplomatic efforts by Nigerian authorities and close collaboration with officials in Côte d’Ivoire aimed at ensuring the safe release of the affected citizens.

The ministry commended the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, led by Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, for its consistent engagement with Ivorian authorities throughout the period of detention.

It noted that the embassy’s persistence, professionalism and continuous communication with relevant institutions in Côte d’Ivoire played a crucial role in resolving the matter through diplomatic channels.

The Federal Government also expressed appreciation to the Ivorian government for its cooperation, describing the outcome as a reflection of the cordial bilateral relationship between both countries.

According to the ministry, the peaceful resolution of the case underscores the strong diplomatic ties and mutual respect shared by Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, expressing optimism that the relationship would continue to deepen in areas of common interest.

Reaffirming its commitment to Nigerians living abroad, the Federal Government said safeguarding the rights, welfare and dignity of its citizens remains a top priority.

It added that it would continue to utilise diplomatic channels to protect Nigerians overseas and provide the necessary support whenever the need arises.

The ministry stressed that the government remains committed to strengthening relations with countries hosting Nigerian communities while ensuring the interests and well-being of Nigerians abroad are adequately protected.
