The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has welcomed the life imprisonment handed down to the man convicted of killing two young Nigerians, Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, during a nightclub shooting in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, in July 2022.
The conviction followed a ruling by the Ontario Court of Justice, which found the offender guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm.
The court subsequently sentenced the convict to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
In a statement issued by the commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM described the judgment as an important milestone in the pursuit of justice and accountability.
The commission noted that although the sentence could not reverse the painful loss suffered by the victims’ families, it offered some measure of comfort and closure after years of legal proceedings.
NiDCOM also commended the Canadian law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities for their diligence in ensuring that justice was served.
The commission further praised the families of the deceased for their resilience and courage throughout the trial, while reaffirming its commitment to supporting Nigerians in the diaspora and advocating for their welfare and protection.
