St. Kitts, Nevis explain denial of entry to 17 Nigerians

The government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has defended its decision to refuse entry to 17 Nigerians over concerns linked to global Ebola surveillance measures.

Authorities in the Caribbean federation said the action was taken as part of precautionary public health steps aimed at safeguarding residents amid renewed international concerns surrounding the deadly disease.

In a statement issued by government officials, the administration explained that the decision followed recommendations from health authorities and existing border safety protocols.

The government noted that Nigeria had been identified by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention as a country facing elevated risk of Ebola importation due to increased international travel and evolving outbreaks in some African regions.

Officials, however, clarified that there was no confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria connected to the present outbreak, stressing that the move was purely preventive.

“While there is currently no confirmed Ebola case linked to Nigeria, the government considers it necessary to adopt precautionary measures in the interest of public safety,” the statement said.

The authorities also stated that Saint Kitts and Nevis maintains cordial relations with Nigeria and its citizens, expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to the affected travellers.

According to the government, the protection of public health remains a top priority, adding that all border decisions are being guided by established health regulations and expert advice.

The statement further stressed that the affected Nigerians were expected to be treated humanely and respectfully throughout the process.

Residents were urged to comply with all health advisories and border control measures as part of efforts to prevent the spread of infectious diseases within the federation.

The development comes as several countries across the world continue tightening health screening and travel protocols following fears over the possible cross-border spread of Ebola.
